New learning landscapes

Three new quality educational contexts have emerged from outdoor, passing through or underused spaces at the Galileo Galilei middle school and at the Marco Polo primary school in Reggio Emilia.

In this phase of cohabitation with COVID-19 and of containment of the infection, one of the most delicate and most discussed issues is the restart of school activities in presence and the related organization of school environments.

How to do it? How to organize spaces and environments safely, without neglecting fundamental aspects of school such as inclusion, comfort, relationships, learning?

Since June 2020, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, in collaboration with the schools of the city, has chosen to accompany the restart of teaching activities in presence through the project “Scuola Diffusa” (Spread-out School).

“Scuola Diffusa” aims to enhance educational environments as community places where the resumption of school life can offer the same access and attendance opportunities by increasing spaces and environments for schooling.

The three pilot projects have been entrusted by the Education Department of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia to Officina Educativa and Fondazione Reggio Children - Centro Loris Malaguzzi in collaboration with architect Francesco Bombardi. Fondazione Reggio Children has made available to two experts, the architects Valentina Conte and Oliver Forghieri, the experience of dialogue between architecture and pedagogy, developed in particular with the “Fare Scuola” project, together with Enel Cuore Onlus.
