In Senegal the return of the Dakar Reve project

On 6 November, the restitution event of Dakar Reve was held, a project launched in 2021 and funded by AICS with the aim of supporting the Dakar municipality in developing a response model to develop an intervention on the issues of waste management, sustainability of municipal services and support for the green economy.

In recent years, the Senegalese capital has in fact undergone a growing phenomenon of urbanisation that has led to significant migration of populations from the countryside to the cities, with a consequent rapid expansion of the urban centre.

Faced with such population growth, without the support of adequate services to protect natural habitats, there has therefore been an accumulation of waste with an estimated 1000 tonnes per day per 100 hectares of land.

Waste management has therefore become an urgent issue, requiring the intervention of the Municipality of Milan, which has implemented a pilot project of differentiated waste collection involving the officials of the Dakar Municipality and local services involved in waste management, users of waste management services and public markets, green micro-enterprises, social workers and citizens directly involved in the various actions.

Other Italian realities also intervened in support of the city, including Fondazione Reggio Children, in collaboration with the Reggio Emilia Municipality's Educational Workshop Service, proposing good practices in terms of circular economy and sustainability education to families, schools, and citizens through workshop activities in Senegal.

A2A Energia, Amsa, Ipsia, Polytechnic of Milan, Ville de Dakar, E4Impact Foundation, IMM DesignLab, Institut African de Gestion Urbaine, CADAK also played a crucial role in raising awareness of green economy issues and developing innovative educational strategies.

On the day of restitution of the activities related to the Dakar Reve project, 10 schools of the Municipality of Dakar were involved, presenting the workshops carried out from 2021 to date with the support of Officina Educativa of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Remida-Fondazione Reggio Children and Fondazione E35, recounting the exchange with Reggio Emilia on environmental education with a specific focus on the concept of transformation.

The event, organised by @IPSIA Senegal, was attended by about 300 people, including the Head of Cabinet of the Municipality of Dakar, the Dakar Education Director and representatives of @AICS and the@Italian Embassy in Dakar. The Direction Education et Insertion (DEI), the Deputy Mayor in charge of education and Officina Educativa of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia also attended.
