Presented to the city in new spaces dedicated to education, sustainability and research

A place that was once the carpentry of Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, then a feed mill, will become a space dedicated to research, education and sustainability, in dialogue with the neighborhood, the city and the communities of the world. It will be the former Caffarri of Reggio Emilia, a few steps from the International Center Loris Malaguzzi and Reggiane Innovation Park, which was presented today, Saturday 23 March. The first phase of the recovery of the complex located in via Gioia, included by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia in the urban regeneration projects developed in recent years by STU Reggiane spa, is now entrusted to the Fondazione Reggio Children for set-up and management and will be fully operational in autumn.

At the event "An architecture for the Fantastic", open to the city, spoke Luca Vecchi, Mayor of Reggio Emilia, Carla Rinaldi, President of Fondazione Reggio Children, Luca Torri, CEO STU Reggiane spa and Cristian Fabbi, Director of the Reggio Children’s Foundation.

Fondazione Reggio Children will set in this large space, full of history but contemporary, its own research on quality education, solidarity, regeneration, social and environmental sustainability, creative learning, Seeking interactions and convergences and involving new partners. The first projects managed by FRC that will inhabit the great nave will be the project PER, Play Explore Research and scintillae-play and learning in the digital age with The LEGO Foundation, the doctorate Reggio Childhood Studies with Desu-Unimore and Remida, the Centro di Riciclaggio Creativo, project of Institution Schools and Children’s Homes of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and Iren with Fondazione Reggio Children, which from the new school year will transfer its headquarters and activities here.

THE INSTITUTIONS' ACTIVITIES

Luca Vecchi, Mayor of Reggio Emilia:

We could summarise this project, so surprising, almost disconcerting, that has given new meaning and significance, in the spirit of the Riuso Project promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, to a place of production and industrial knowledge from the twentieth century, Transforming it into new knowledge and knowledge from laboratory research, both material and digital. Research linking education, solidarity, regeneration, social and environmental sustainability, creativity. A bet entrusted to the wisdom of the Reggio Children Foundation. A gift of vital energy, which we have seen realized, with flattering results and thanks to the work of Stu Reggiane spa, also in other places of our city in these years. I am thinking of the Reggiane Innovation Park: a physical closeness, of ideas and mission, for a virtuous osmosis of knowledge, of which the Malaguzzi International Centre is already part. And I think about how much the Caffarri is hosting, thanks to the prestigious collaborations with The LEGO Foundation, with Desu-Unimore and with Remida, the Creative Recycling Center, project of Institution Schools and Nurseries and Iren with the same Foundation. Without neglecting the other activities that in the near future will enrich the life of Caffarri: the theatrical culture of MaMiMò and the practice of sports with Boxe Reggiana. They are relations of knowledge that arise from relationships between people: those between the frequentators of this place and those that will be born for the benefit of inclusion in the district of Santa Croce and the city".

Carla Rinaldi, president of the Reggio Children’s Foundation: 

"A place that was of knowledge and doing, continues its history as a great laboratory of research, looking at the world. A place of places, which promotes listening and dialogue, between the different identities of the projects of Fondazione Reggio Children, but among the many cultures and identities that we meet, even in this neighborhood. A place that teaches reuse, which makes us artisans of knowledge, where we study the game and learning with digital, regeneration, to propose quality education projects in the world".

"In the context of the Innovation Park, the intervention at the former feed mill Caffarri plays a central role to promote significant changes in the district of Santa Croce. The arrival of Fondazione Reggio Children and Remida today, and in the future of MaMiMò and Boxe, represents the idea that the project of the Reggiane area also goes from social to sustainability. We are convinced that the development of the neighborhood must keep together the urban environment, the well-being of its inhabitants, social inclusion and innovation, as well as attention to the aesthetic quality that emerges in the recovery of the historical memory of the property".

LA STORIA E IL PROGETTO DI RECUPERO DEL COMUNE

Il complesso dell’ex Caffarri, che svetta nel quartiere di Santa Croce con il suo caratteristico impianto ‘a torre’, ha una lunga storia produttiva e industriale, originariamente legata al destino delle Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, quando, nei primi del Novecento è falegnameria per la costruzione di treni, poi per componenti degli aerei da guerra. Negli anni ’60 passa a un privato e viene convertito e ampliato con funzione di mangimificio, per poi dismettere l’attività nel 2013.

Oggetto di un ampio progetto di rigenerazione del comparto urbano nel quartiere di Santa Croce, l’ex Caffarri è stato incluso nel 2018 dal Comune di Reggio Emilia nel Progetto Riuso, che conferisce nuovo senso e significato agli spazi esistenti. L’intervento di rigenerazione e riqualificazione, con l’introduzione di nuove funzioni, è suddiviso in due lotti, coinvolge una superficie totale di 2.400 metri quadrati e ha visto un investimento complessivo di 2.442.000 euro, di cui 991.000 euro finanziati attraverso il Bando nazionale Aree urbane e Periferie e la restante parte da STU Reggiane spa. Il percorso è stato accompagnato da molti eventi pubblici temporanei di natura sociale e culturale, aperti alla cittadinanza, per la riscoperta dell’area e dei volumi inutilizzati.

Il primo lotto, quello presentato oggi, affidato per la gestione a Fondazione Reggio Children, è costituito di 1.200 metri quadrati distribuiti principalmente a piano terra in un grande open space a duplice altezza, completato da un piano soppalcato. Gli altri lotti riguardano invece gli spazi destinati a Centro Teatrale MaMiMò e Boxe Reggiana, vicini di casa e partecipi all’evento di oggi. L’edificio è di proprietà privata, ceduto in concessione a STU Reggiane spa con durata ventennale.

Il progetto di riuso di questo immobile è stato seguito da Officine Urbane di Reggio Emilia, in particolare dall’architetta Annalia Immovilli, ed ha tenuto a preservare il grande open space, attraversato da una struttura interna a tubi e giunti, stile ponteggio, che caratterizza e scandisce lo spazio oltre a perimetrare alcune aree.

IL NUOVO ALLESTIMENTO PER VALORIZZARE RICERCA E DIALOGO

La sfida di questo nuovo luogo sarà quella di favorire, attraverso la ricerca educativa laboratoriale, lo scambio, il confronto, la contaminazione tra idee, pratiche e saperi diversi, guardando ai temi che attraversano la vita contemporanea nelle società e degli esseri viventi sul Pianeta, dal cambiamento climatico alle povertà educative agli sviluppi del digitale.

Con il nuovo allestimento, lo spazio interno, caratterizzato da una navata unica, percorsa da colonne di mattoni profilate in ferro e segnata da due grandi silos, preserva la forte identità industriale e nel contempo affianca le possibilità innovative dei vari laboratori di ricerca. L’allestimento verrà caratterizzato dall’impermanenza, dalla possibilità di continuo cambiamento, con arredi mobili e contesti fluidi per incoraggiare il dialogo e l’interazione tra le attività di Fondazione Reggio Children e di Remida, per accogliere in varie modalità un pubblico di bambine e bambini, studiosi, giovani, famiglie, cittadine e cittadini di ogni età e provenienza.

L’organizzazione degli spazi prevede: alcune postazioni per dipendenti di Fondazione Reggio Children, che conserva sede e uffici di presidenza nella palazzina di via Bligny, aree laboratorio con caratteristiche specifiche secondo i progetti, un’area ristoro con una cucina dall’identità urbana, l’area di distribuzione dei materiali e del “salvato da Remida” insieme ad un ampio magazzino dedicato. È prevista la possibilità di creare una zona immersiva che può diventare un piccolo teatro o luogo di proiezione e incontro, e uno spazio conferenze. Al primo piano, lo spazio dedicato a dottorandi e dottorande con postazioni e ampia vetrata che si affaccia sull’interno.

Per lo sviluppo progettuale dell’allestimento degli spazi, Fondazione Reggio Children ha affidato la progettazione a due importanti studi di architettura e design, selezionati per l’approccio culturale transdisciplinare e visionario: MPA Architects, in particolare l’architetto Mattia Parmiggiani e Total Tool Srl, nella figura dell’architetto Giulio Ceppi. Allo studio Bunker, che ha curato la nuova identità visiva di Fondazione Reggio Children, è stata affidata invece la progettazione della grafica ambientale, in collaborazione con MPA Architects e lo staff di Fondazione Reggio Children.

IL TRASFERIMENTO DELLA SEDE DI REMIDA

Remida, progetto culturale di sostenibilità, creatività e ricerca sui materiali di scarto, diffuso in tutto il mondo, trasferirà in questo spazio la propria sede, che sarà abitata a partire da settembre 2024. L’attività quotidiana e di distribuzione dei materiali di Remida continuerà quindi fino al 31 maggio nell’attuale sede in via Verdi, mentre i mesi successivi, da giugno a settembre, sarà sospesa per consentire il trasloco e il riallestimento dei materiali nella nuova sede di via Gioia 24, dove riaprirà alla grande con l’avvio dell’anno scolastico.

UNA GIORNATA CON LA FANTASTICA

L’evento “Un’architettura per la Fantastica” è inserito nel programma “50+1” dedicato alla “Grammatica della fantasia”, citando la Fantastica come “quell’arte di inventare” a cui si ispirò Gianni Rodari nelle giornate trascorse a Reggio Emilia.

Nel pomeriggio, dalle 15 alle 18, con Un salto in Via Gioia, la visita libera degli spazi è aperta a tutte e tutti, con possibilità di attività ed esplorazioni ad ingresso gratuito, a cura di Fondazione Reggio Children con i progetti scintillae-play and learning in the digital age, Remida - il Centro di Riciclaggio Creativo, Pause-Atelier dei Sapori, dottorande e dottorandi in Reggio Childhood Studies ed inoltre i vicini di casa, MaMiMò e Boxe Reggiana.
